Giant Porites coral from Noonu Atoll

A giant colony of  Porites sp., 30 meters in circumference, 8 meters wide and 5 meters high has been reported from Noonu Atoll, Maldives. Sitting at a depth of 11m. This monumental coral is fully alive and belongs to one of the slowest-growing coral species: it is likely a centennial giant coral. The Marine Biologist Cecilia Maccanti, working in Noonu Atoll, bumped into this very large coral colony of Porites sp. during a dive and reported it to us through our website providing unique data for our citizen science project.
